New Kori Pop Christmas EP (Free Download): more love goes into handmade gifts

Local singer/songwriter Kori Pop has an amazing holiday gift for her fans. The aptly named more love goes into handmade gifts is a free 4-song EP download.

She starts off with two yuletide classics, Christmas Time is Here and Rudie the Red-Nosed Reindeer (yes, Kori renames it slightly). Thenwe have two wonderful originals Messed Up This Christmas and To My Winter Child.

Whether classic or self-penned, Kori bring her pop-folk style and soft, angelic voice to all the tunes. On some tracks, there's even some electronic music touches.

New Andre Bisson CD: Rhythm and Blues Christmas

Tired of the usual sappy, low-energy, yuletide tunes? Well local musician Andre Bisson has the solution for you: he recently released, Rhythm and Blues Christmas, a new CD packed with funky, swingin', rockin' holiday delights.

Andre and friends take traditional tunes and add a major dose of R&B. Rudolph, Silent Night (which is anything but), Jingle Bells and more are given a great rump-shaking twist. The Christmas tunes end with a wonderful bluesy version of Please Come Home for Christmas.

As a holiday gift there's something old and something new at the end of the collection: Two bonus tracks - Free Ride Blues from his previous CD, Rhythm and Blues Experience, and a great version of Ain't Too Proud to Beg from the upcoming album Beyond the Covers.

This great yuletide disc is available at their amazing live shows and through cdbaby (CD/Download)

New James Anthony CD: On the Edge

Burlington bluesman, James Anthony gets all soulful on his latest CD, On the Edge. This great sound suits him extremely well.

With cool female background vocals, horn section, organ, and more, James and the gang infuse the disc with incredible flavours of blues, funk, jazz, rock and soul.

Highlights include the sweet ballad, Take Your Time With Her, the hard boogieing Hound Dog Blues (featuring Les Smith of Trickbag on harmonica) and three accomplished instrumentals.

The album is available at James' high-energy live shows and as a download/physical CD on CDbaby

New Burnin' Ethyl CD: Pop the Hood

Hamilton band Burnin' Ethyl have unleashed a new CD, Pop the Hood. The disc shows a group that can go beyond the typical rockabilly sound and add a few new twists and turns.

The album's like taking a '57 Chevy and adding a modern engine. It has the cool retro feel but is extremely revved up.

The boys have injected catchy pop (Girls Like You, Outta Nothing), country (Won't Take Long, You're There), and some hard rock (Let Me Down, the aptly titled Fast As You Can) to the music. There are even two raw, acoustic bonus tracks to end the disc (Shuttin' Er Down, High Octane).

The CD is currently available at their killer live shows.

Below is the video for Won't Take Long.

Local Musician Bernie Moffatt Passes

Local veteran musician Bernie Moffatt passed away on Monday, November 15, 2010 at Hamilton’s General Hospital from heart-related issues. Bernie was a regular at the Hamilton Guitar Association and the Hamilton Folk Club. As well, the singer/guitarist attended a number of jams in the Golden Horseshoe area.

Not only was Bernie a first-class musician but he also worked as an actor for a number of years. This included bit parts in movies and being a stand-in for legendary comedian George Carlin on a few projects.

To his friends, he will always be known as a very friendly, funny guy with tons of interesting stories. He’ll be greatly missed.

A personal message from Lou, our blogger:
I had the honour of getting to know Bernie in recent months and was proud to call him a friend. He had many interesting jokes, stories and songs to share. My main regret is that I didn’t get a chance to get to know him better – the guy was quite a character. I’ll miss you Bernie. My condolences to his family and friends.
