Whitehorse on 2013 Polaris Music Prize Short List

On July 16, 2013, the Polaris Music Prize Shortlist was unveiled. Talented local duo, Whitehorse (Luke Doucet and Melissa McClelland) were recognized for their work on their incredible latest CD, The Fate of the World Depends on This Kiss. Congratulations and good luck!.

A $30,000 prize for the artists comes with the award.

The winner will be revealed at a Gala  held on September 23, 2013 at the Carlu in Toronto.  Another area singer/songwriter (and former nominee) Kathleen Edwards will co-host the event with rapper, Shad.

Kathleen Edwards on John Denver Tribute

Kathleen Edwards was a great choice to perform All of My Memories for The Music Is You - a Tribute to John Denver.  The local singer/songwriter does an incredible job using her amazing voice and guitar work to put her own spin on such a classic tune.

She holds her own beside great covers by Dave Matthews, Train, Lucinda Williams, Emmylou Harris, Mary Charin Carpenter and others.

Kathleen Edwards and Stan Rogers on CBC's Top Canadian Singers List

Some great local talent made it onto CBC Music's recent list of Top 25 Greatest Canadian Singers Ever.  The late, legendary, Stan Rogers and the amazing Kathleen Edwards were listed back to back (21 and 20, respectively).  They joined such luminaries as k.d. lang (who earned the top spot), Burton Cummings, Sarah McLachlan, David Clayton-Thomas, Joni Mitchell, Gordon Lightfoot and many others.  Congratulations!

Local Musicians Nominated for Junos

Hamilton has once again had a strong showing at the Juno nominations, which just goes to prove how much world-class music is in the area.

Both Jack de Keyzer and Steve Strongman will be going head to head for Blues Album of the Year of the year along with Colin James (whose nominated disc includes songwriting from Hamilton's own Tom Wilson), Steve Hill, and Shakura S'Aida (her nominated CD features a performance from local blues legend Harrison Kennedy).

New Kathleen Edwards CD: Voyageur

Local singer/songwriter Kathleen Edwards's latest CD, Voyageur (out on Maple Music), is getting a lot of attention. With appearances on Letterman and rave reviews across the world, she is definitely being noticed.

Her latest offering is certainly worth all the acclaim.  Kathleen has expanded her roots rock sound to include a more produced, modern sound.  The album showcases the singer's vocals as part of a lush, beautiful soundscape. Though alternating between soft, melodic,and poppy textures - the work never overpowers the main focal point: her magnificent voice.

Highlights include the quiet Going to Hell, the jazzy tones of For the Record, and the wonderful single, Change the Sheets.

The album is available through Maple Music and as a download from iTunes or eMusic.

Juno Award Winners

On Sunday, March 29th, the Junos were handed out.

Unfortunately, Fred Eaglesmith and Kathleen Edwards didn't receive any of the little statues.

Edwards was in the spotlight when she arrived with and performed with superstar, Bryan Adams. (See picture on left)

Also, local boy Daniel Lanois won for Producer of the Year for his CD, "Here is What Is". Congratulations.

After a few years apart, the roots rock band, Crawlin' Kingsnakes have quite a few things to share on their blog.

They have released a limited edition (100 copies only) live CD, Rockin' the Casbah. It features a live 2004 reunion concert.

The band is planning to release a brand new studio album, The Lost Years, in the summer

Duke Foster is now their new bass player.

The 8th annual Indie Awards were handed out on March 8.

Local songstress Kathleen Edwards (left) won for best Folk Artist.

Hamilton Blues Legend Rita Chiarelli recently sent out a message to her fans. In it, she mentions her thoughts about 2008 and her plans for the future (including working on new album).

The full message from Rita:

Hello folks,

I’m writing to you from a hotel room in Vienna, Austria...every once in a while I like to share with you some great events...

First ..Let me say that 2008 was a “very good year”....2 nominations for ‘uptown goes downtown’ and another award for ‘cuore...the Italian sessions’..Some very cool gigs...2 tours of Europe....

2009 is looking even better....great festivals coming this summer, to some of these I’ll be bringing my seven piece band... I call it”the big blues band”...

3 nights with the Kitchener Waterloo Symphony...

A return to Thunder Bay for a concert with the Thunder Bay symphony...

And...hey, I have finally booked studio time to record a new all original album....more on this later....

Now I figure there has got to be some great inspiration at Amadeus’ house...where he wrote many great operas...(’le nozze di Figaro’)...and where he died....

So there you have it...an update will come when I get back to Canada...oh, I’m having some footage taken...so if I don’t look too tired, bloated, homesick, weary, I‘ll have it posted...
