New Sonny Del-Rio Compilation CD: Blow Your Horn Man!

http://www.emusic.com/album/sonny-del-rio/blow-your-horn-man/12994788/
Hamilton music veteran Sonny Del-Rio made a name for himself playing fabulous music for over 50 years.  His latest release, Blow Your Horn Man! is a "best of" compilation of some of the saxman's greatest work.

It's hard to create a CD that encapsulates such a storied career but Blow Your Horn Man! succeeds quite well.  Not only is it a wonderful historical document - its a kick ass disc as well.  The album was even nominated for a Hamilton Music Award this year.

Compiled from many of his solo CDs and other sources, it features work with such luminaries as Trickbag, King Biscuit Boy, Jack Pedler (Teenage Head), Neil Nickafor, Mike Williams, Dan Thomas (Hammertones), Jesse O'Brien and many more.

As an added bonus, there's an amazing unrelased holiday tune, Merry Christmas to You, where Sonny teams up with a who's who of the Hamilton music scene: Tom Wilson, Dave Rave, Skip Prokop (Lighthouse), Jude Johnson, Ray Materick, Harrison Kennedy, and others.

You can pick this CD at any of Sonny's live shows or download it through eMusic or iTunes.

Vote for the Canadian Music Party

HBL (Hamilton Blues Lovers) Inc doesn’t usually get involved in politics but we’ve decided to help spread the good word about the newly formed Canadian Music Party. A few local musicians were tired of the current political climate and decided to take matters into their own hands.

Our very own blogger, Lou, was put in charge of propaganda. “We think it’s about time musicians had a say in how this country is run,” he explained.

“At our last meeting, we chose singer/songwriter/artist Tom Wilson as our leader and hopefully, the next Prime Minister,” Lou added, “There were many worthy candidates. In the end, it was hard to ignore Mr. Wilson’s passion and commitment (not to mention his height) when the final tally was counted.”

Mr. Wilson and the party have already outlined the main points of their future election campaign:
  • Immediate decriminalization of marijuana
  • All government business will only start after 2 pm.
  • Groupies can now be listed as dependents on income tax
  • Instruments can now be listed as dependents on income tax
  • Requesting “Mustang Sally” or “Freebird” is punishable by life in prison
  • Stealing musical instruments will be punishable by death
  • Musicians to get LCBO tax discounts
  • Hamilton will become the Canadian capital
  • "Oh Canada" to be replaced by "Oh What a Feeling" as the national anthem
  • The Queen will be replaced by King Biscuit Boy on all money
  • Frankie Venom will be put on the $50 bill.
  • Jackie Washington will now be on the $100 bill
Even though the next election is still far away, the party have already started hiring for various positions:
With this many musicians in one place, Lou says they were going to advertise a groupie wrangler position but luckily, local music fan and videographer Jill Johnson graciously accepted the job as an unpaid volunteer. “We’d like to thank Jill for her selfless act and for saving us some money. I’m sure she’ll take real good care of those groupies!”

So please remember to vote for your local CMP candidate when the next election rolls around. We need to put some more groove into Canadian parliament.

If you’d like to volunteer, please contact our volunteer coordinator, Ms. Luigi at 905-555-5555. For all other information, please call our secretary April Fulcilli at the same number.

King Biscuit Boy to Receive Lifetime Achievement Award

When the Maple Blues Awards are handed out on January 17, 2011, local blues legend Richard Newell, aka King Biscuit Boy, will be recognized for his body of work.

From the media release:

Toronto, ON (January 11, 2011) – Hamilton blues legend Richard Newell a.k.a King Biscuit Boy is set to receive a special posthumous lifetime achievement award at the upcoming Maple Blues Awards on January 17. Newell, a lifelong resident of Hamilton, Ontario and a pioneer on the blues music scene in Canada was best known for his mastery of the harmonica. A member of Canadian rock icons Crowbar and a two-time Juno nominee, Newell shared the stage with Muddy Waters, Joe Cocker, Etta James, and Ronnie Hawkins, who is credited with discovering him. Each year since his death in 2003, The Friends of Richard Newell have held a benefit concert in his memory, with the money raised going to a music scholarship fund at Mohawk College of Applied Arts and Technology in Hamilton, Ontario.

Cool Fool by Doug Carter Explores Local Music Scene

Depending on your age, Cool Fool: Blues Rockin' in the Hammer by bassist Doug Carter, will be either a wonderful trip down memory lane or an entertaining history lesson. This amazing memoir chronicles Doug's days as a bassist for numerous Hamilton (mainly blues) bands from the sixties onward.

The author's writing style is very loose and informal, which definitely fits a book about the blues. It's an easy, fun read. Peppered with many unique photos, the memoir is a great experience.

Doug's co-star for this book would have to be the late King Biscuit Boy, his longtime friend and musical partner as they both struggle with making a living in the music industry. The memoir also doubles as a look at the local blues legend's early days.

Along the way, the writer touches on his encounters with many local music makers such as Harrison Kennedy, the Stingrays, Guitar Mikey, Jack DeKeyzer, and many more. Doug starts the book off with a wonderful story about an encounter with the legendary Muddy Waters.

This book is a must have for all local music fans, no matter what your age.

Below is a video promoting the book. Click here if you can't see it.
