Stompin' Tom Connors Passes + Local Reaction

Canadian icon and music legend Stompin' Tom Connors passed away on March 6, 2013 of natural causes at the age of 77.  He was a beloved musician who trancended genres and generations.  Our condolences to his family, friends and fans.

The singer/songwriter left a letter to his fans to be released after his death:

Hello friends, I want all my fans, past, present, or future, to know that without you, there would have not been any Stompin' Tom.

It was a long hard bumpy road, but this great country kept me inspired with its beauty, character, and spirit, driving me to keep marching on and devoted to sing about its people and places that make Canada the greatest country in the world.

I must now pass the torch, to all of you, to help keep the Maple Leaf flying high, and be the Patriot Canada needs now and in the future.

I humbly thank you all, one last time, for allowing me in your homes, I hope I continue to bring a little bit of cheer into your lives from the work I have done.

Sincerely,

Your Friend always,

Stompin' Tom Connors

Ronnie "the Hawk" Hawkins was interviewed  on CHCH about the superstar.  He told a story about worrying about Tom when he played to university kids who don't usually like his style of music.  Tom earned a standing ovation from them.  "I haven't worried about him since." The Hawk exclaimed.

Local reaction came quickly on social media.  Here are a few highlights:

David Crossley (Deacons): "You can't really explain to people in other parts of the world who (or how important) Stompin' Tom was, because there really is no equivalent in other cultures"

Dave Gould: "Tom Connors has inspired me more than almost any singer/songwriter in my life. His lyrics got me through elementary school geography. I owe a big part of my appreciation for Canada to him. I am sad he is gone. R.I.P. Tom."

Tia McGraff: "Thank you Stompin' Tom for all your great music, and honoring Canada!
You are in our hearts and music forever."

New Dave Gould CD: ADAD

In the review of Dave Gould's CD, Truck for Sale, a few months ago, we described it as sometimes strange, edgy and alternative. It turns out that was just the beginning.

His follow up, ADAD (it stands for Attention Deficit Artist’s Disorder) is a truly quirky, experimental record where the rules have been flung out the window.

The singer/songwriter uses electronic beeps, percussive sounds, acoustic guitar and a few other odd bits to create a genre-defying experience that will blow your mind. This CD is definitely for those who aren't afraid to try something new and different.

The disc is available at his live shows and as a download on iTunes and eMusic.

New Dave Gould CD: Truck for Sale

If anyone has seen his live solo shows, they know that Dave Gould has an air of energetic fun about him. What would you expect from a man who occasionally drums on a toilet (and does it well)?. This liveliness is definitely evident in his latest CD, Truck for Sale.
Dave manages to create light-hearted roots country/folk music while maintaining a high degree of musicianship. These aren't "joke" songs but witty, sometimes strange, interesting, catchy numbers. The guitar and vocal work are superb. There's even a bit of an edgy, alternative vibe at play here.
His co-conspirators on this unique project include Steve Didemus, Chris Cracknell, Gerry Gregg, Tanya Amyote, and Steven Fuller.

The disc is available at his live shows and is available on iTunes and eMusic.

New Famous Framus Band CD: On Mortal Love

This ain't your daddy's Blues!

With On Mortal Love, the latest CD from the Famous Framus Band, the group unleashes and unique, edgy, powerful album.

It's a work of loud, rough, punk-like spirit that still manages to retain a traditional country/delta blues sound. Despite the rawness of it, the duo, which includes Famous Framus (vocals, guitar, banjo) and Dave Gould (drums, vocals) show off their great musical skills

It's not just fast numbers either. They also throw in some beautiful slower arrangements (Strange Dream, Girl With a Heart of Stone, Don't Throw Me Away) with a lot of emotion.

The disc is available at their dynamic live shows.

Below are a few live performances of songs from the disc

We'll be posting more from this show later.
